What is HRV (heart rate variability)?
Every recovery wearable puts HRV front and center — but few explain what it actually is. Here's heart rate variability in plain English: what it measures, why it signals recovery, and why the trend matters more than the number.

If you own a recovery tracker, HRV is probably the headline number it shows — and one of the least-understood. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. Your heart does not beat like a metronome; even at a steady 60 beats per minute, the gap between beats is constantly, subtly changing — maybe 0.9 seconds, then 1.05, then 0.95. HRV measures those tiny fluctuations. And counterintuitively, more variation is generally better: it is a sign your nervous system is relaxed, adaptable and recovered. Here is why, and how to read your number sensibly.
Why more variation means more recovered
HRV is a window into your autonomic nervous system — the automatic controller that has two branches. The sympatheticbranch is "fight or flight" (stress, effort, alertness); the parasympatheticbranch is "rest and digest" (recovery, calm). When you are rested and relaxed, the parasympathetic branch is active and your heartbeat timing varies freely — high HRV. When you are stressed, fatigued, ill or under-recovered, the sympathetic branch dominates and locks the rhythm into a steadier, less variable beat — low HRV. So a higher HRV usually signals a body that is ready to perform; a suppressed HRV signals stress or incomplete recovery. What affects your HRV
- Training load: a hard workout temporarily lowers HRV as your body recovers; chronic overtraining keeps it suppressed.
- Sleep: poor or short sleep drops HRV; good sleep raises it.
- Stress: psychological stress lowers HRV just as physical stress does.
- Alcohol: one of the most reliable HRV killers — a few drinks visibly suppress overnight HRV.
- Illness: HRV often drops a day or two before you feel sick, making it an early warning.
- Hydration, breathing and general health all play a role too.
What is a "good" HRV?
This is where most people go wrong: there is no universal good number.HRV varies enormously between individuals — it is heavily influenced by age (it declines as we get older), genetics and fitness — so one healthy person might sit at 40 milliseconds and another at 90, and both are fine. Comparing your HRV to a friend's or an online average is close to meaningless. What matters is your own baseline and trend: is your HRV this week higher, lower, or steady versus your normal range? A drop below your baseline suggests stress, fatigue or illness; a return to or above it suggests you are recovered. Read the direction, not the digit.
A key caveat: don't over-read a single number
HRV is noisy. A single night's reading can swing for all sorts of reasons — a late meal, a stressful day, a slightly different sleep position, or just normal fluctuation. Do not panic over one low morning or celebrate one high one. Good trackers show a rolling baseline and flag when you are meaningfully outside it; that trend is the signal. Also, measurement method matters — a chest strap reads HRV more precisely than a wrist optical sensor, though for tracking your own trend a good wrist or ring device is plenty.
How to actually use HRV
The practical payoff is simple. When your HRV is at or above your baseline, your body is signaling it is recovered — a green light to train hard. When it is meaningfully below baseline for more than a day, treat it as a nudge to ease off, prioritize sleep, manage stress, and recover before pushing again.
